What Diabetes Really Is

When most people think of diabetes, they think of “too much sugar.”
But the truth is, diabetes is really about how your body uses insulin.

In type 2 diabetes—the most common form—two things can happen:

Your body doesn’t make enough insulin.

Or, your cells stop responding to the insulin that is made (this is called insulin resistance).

When this happens, sugar (glucose) builds up in your bloodstream instead of moving into your cells for energy. Over time, that extra sugar silently damages blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, and even your eyes.
